Countries I Have Visited

My recent trip to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan means I have now visited 205 of the 245 countries and territories of the world. My list is broad, including freely associated states like the Cook Islands and overseas territories like French Polynesia, and if you want to take a more restricted view and only count member states of the United Nations, I’ve been to 171 of the 192 UN members. I only count a country as “visited” if I passed through Customs and Immigration controls or traveled around the country if individual border controls don’t exist, as is the case in much of Europe. I don’t count airport stopovers or visits to border posts. Here’s a map of the countries and territories I have visited:

UPDATE: In October 2009, I visited Saudi Arabia and Yemen to bring my total number of countries visited up to 207, 173 of them UN members. In June 2010, I also traveled to Gibraltar, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland.
