On June 1, 2009, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa opened on Natadola Beach between Nadi and Sigatoka. Each of the 216 oversized rooms and suites has a private terrace or balcony. Club InterContinental with 55 hilltop villas is expected to open in September, 2009. This luxurious resort has all the five-star trappings you’d expect: four swimming pools, three restaurants, and two bars, plus a spa, gym, fitness center, dive shop, activities center, kids club, meeting rooms, 500-seat ballroom, business center, and wireless internet. The 18-hole, 7,000-yard golf course sprawls across the rolling hills next to the resort and right down to the shore. The white sandy beach at Natadola is among Viti Levu’s finest but there isn’t much coral for snorkelers. Instead, the surf rolls to shore unbroken, providing a venue for surfers.
In contrast to the InterContinental, it’s still unknown if or when the JW Marriott Fiji Resort and Spa up the coast at Momi Bay will open. The Marriott should have opened by now but it seems that land disputes, financial problems, and poor planning have taken the wind out of the developer’s sails. That a pity for the investors but not such a loss for the rest of us as the artificial beach in front of the Marriott never could compare with Natadola and the overwater bungalows were just a scam. Budget-priced [email protected] is right next to the Marriott site.
