Air Rarotonga will be offering direct flights from Apia, Samoa, to the atolls of the Northern Cook Islands for Christmas, 2009. Penrhyn, Manihiki, and Pukapuka are actually closer to Apia than they are to Rarotonga, in fact, the distance from Apia to Pukapuka (an official port of entry) is half that of Rarotonga to Pukapuka. The Air Rarotonga flights will connect in Apia with Air New Zealand and Polynesia Blue flights to/from Auckland, Bribane, and Sydney. The exact schedule hasn’t been decided although the flights will likely operate in December 2009 and January 2010. It should be a cheaper and faster route between Australia/New Zealand and the Northern Cook Islands for local residents and visitors alike.
My travel guidebooks have been serving island travelers since 1979. Moon Handbooks South Pacific is now in its 8th edition, and Tahiti and Fiji each have guides of their own. This blog site is intended to share new facts as they cross my desk, and to discuss issues of interest to visitors. So grab a seat: We're off on a virtual island tour.
