Taveuni lies on the opposite side of Fiji from the better known resorts of the Mamanuca Group and Coral Coast yet it has everything the most demanding visitor could desire. Here you’ll find some of the South Pacific’s most sought after scuba sites and ecotourism parks, plus a clutch of exclusive honeymoon resorts.
Taveuni is easy to reach on Air Pacific which operates daily flights to Matei Airport from both Nadi International Airport and Fiji’s capital Suva. Large car ferries from Suva call three times a week.
Many of Taveuni’s restaurants and hotels are around the island’s airport with a smaller cluster near the ferry terminal. Southern Taveuni is wilder but it does have one international resort. A few other designer resorts are on nearby Matagi and Qamea islands, accessible only via Taveuni. Lower profile facilities for budget travelers are easy to find on Taveuni.
Almost every Taveuni traveler tries to get to Bouma National Heritage Park on the east side of the island to swim at Bouma Falls or do the Lavena Coastal Walk. The Rainbow Reef just west across Somosomo Strait from Taveuni is world famous for its crevices, overhangs, soft corals, turtles, and other marine life explored by daily dive boats.
